Workstation computers are strange beasts: it’s rare that someone more used to a traditional laptop or desktop will need them, or indeed, will be able to justify the extra expense. But for those who need massive amounts of performance for specific tasks, there’s no way to beat them. In contrast with their consumer products, HP’s workstations have earned a reputation as some of the best in the business, and we were thrilled to put the new Z420 Workstation through its paces.

Hardware
The Z420 Workstation is on the low end of HP’s full-sized Z-class, with only the even newer Z220 and the all-in-one Z1 below it. That said, it still gives you all the functionality of a full-sized workstation, and makes great effort to deliver first-class performance with a relatively economical price.
Our test unit came equipped with an eight-core Intel Xeon E5-1620 CPU clocked at 3.6Ghz, a relatively modest 8GB of memory and 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, and an AMD FirePro V5900 professional graphics card. Other additions include a multi-card reader and an extra guide and fan assembly for the graphics card. For these parts the total comes to $2762, up from the base price of $1169. A maxxed-out Z420 with the top end processor and graphics, an NVIIDA Quadro 5000 graphics card, 64GB of memory, huge SSDs and hard drives, integrated carrying handles and the like pushes towards $12,000.

For those interested in the Z420 or one of its bigger brothers in an IT environment, you really shouldn’t pay attention to the components. These are staggeringly configurable and in any case, the tower form factor is designed for replacements and upgrades. The case itself is of some interest to us here. HP’s workstations are renowned for being tough, and indeed this is the case: steel and hard plastic are hard to mess up. But what caught my eye is just how easy it is to add and remove parts, thanks to an ingenious system of tabs, handles, slides and slots.
When I cracked the case (which is itself quite easy thanks to a handled access panel) I found that every single component could be removed by hand, with the notable exception of the motherboard, processor and power supply. Since these are generally the components that are left alone, it seems just about right. The only problem I encountered was with the graphics card brace, which achieved a tool-less design with an unfortunately flimsy plastic lip. Have a gander at a true “unboxing” video below:

The outside of the case is just as important. The front of the case has three USB ports, two of which use the much faster USB 3.0 standard. You’ll also find FireWire and audio in/out. Around the back you’ll find another two USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports, an extra FireWire port, the audio and Ethernet ports embedded on the motherboard, and two PS/2 ports (for you die-hard Model M users). A locking mechanism keeps your expensive interior safe, and a rear-mounted power button (identical in function to the front button, not just a switch) completes the build.

While not as pretty as a standard desktop, and indeed not as stylish as the new Z620 and Z820 monster machines, the Z420 clearly means business. Upgradeable components include three optical drive bays and 3.5-inch hard drive bays, two PCIe-16X slots, and a 600-watt power supply. Even the most demanding of users could keep this machine up to date for years.
Software
It’s rare that we see Windows 7 unencumbered by extra software, but naturally workstation-class users aren’t interested in bloatware. HP doesn’t disappoint: the only non-essential programs that came with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit were the Bing Bar (sigh), a Corel DVD viewer, Roxio Creator Business and HP’s proprietary Remote Graphics Software (RGS).

RGS deserves a special note here. In many ways it reproduces the functionality of Windows’ own RDP, but is tuned to the exacting demands of graphics professionals. Demonstrations showed the software keeping up with some rather amazing CAD visuals in real-time. RGS is free for use with any HP computer.

Needless to say, Windows users who are tired of bloatware will find a lot to love here. While many users and IT managers prefer to install Windows from scratch, this is the first machine I’ve seen in perhaps a decade where I didn’t feel the need. Performance is smooth and screaming fast, as you would expect with these components. Other pre-installed OS options include Red Hat Linux, and you can order recovery media for an extra $10.
Performance
Components with this kind of power are, quite frankly, far beyond our usual fare. While not exactly ideal for gamers thanks to the OpenGL-specific graphics cards, those whose work demands incredible amounts of power won’t be disappointed. Graphic design, CAD, medical imaging, financial tracking… there’s enough power and options here to satisfy everyone.

In my own personal usage, Photoshop and Premiere are about the toughest programs that I put my machines through. The Z420, as expected, put the other Windows laptops and desktops I’ve used lately (all of which had second-generation Core-series processors) to shame with its combination of an 8-core Xeon E5 processor and fast memory. For those with the inclination, even faster processor and storage options are available.
Benchmarks aren’t all that relevant on a machine as configurable as this one. Needless to say the Z420 has far outpaced any consumer-focused Windows machine we’ve ever tested, and only the latest revision of the Mac Pro comes close. PCMark 7 gives this configuration a score of 3168 – you can see the full test in the gallery section.

An important note about all that screaming horsepower: it doesn’t, in fact, scream. During extensive uses I never once heard the Z420 make noise that surpassed the ambient volume of my home, with the exception of some extremely fast disk writes. If it weren’t for the LED status lights I might never know it was on. There’s some incredible engineering that’s been put into airflow, heat, vibration and noise management, and it shows. This thing makes my home-built desktop (with some pretty high-end cooling components itself) sound like a sputtering B-52.
Wrap-Up

There aren’t many reading this that need massive amounts of power for specific and often crucial tasks. But for those who do, and can afford the premium that a workstation demands, the Z420 is an excellent choice. While not as flashy as the machines above it or as compact as those below it in HP’s line, it strikes a happy medium while keeping a wide variety of initial configuration and upgrade options.

When it comes to desktops, I nearly always advocate building from the ground up for those with the skills to do so. the Z420 is the first machine that’s made me reconsider. The sheer ease of replacing components along with a truly amazing level of sound suppression make me wish my own computers were half as user-friendly. If you need a full-size workstation, the Z420′s combination of features and price (depending upon your configuration) is very, very hard to beat.

Excellent upgrade!

OK, so to add some perspective to this I will say that I upgraded from a 4 year old underpowered Dell laptop with barely a gig of RAM so any upgrade would be a good one for me. That being said, I am still very impressed with my initial experience with this product. I got it for what I consider to be a very reasonable price – under $550 and less than it would have cost direct from HP, even with their promotions and dicounts. The 640gb hard drive is huge for a relatively ‘normal’ user like me; I have a digital photo album, about 500-600 songs and a few videos saved so storage is not likely to be an issue for me. It comes with 6gb of RAM so the performance is pretty speedy (for me, it’s lightning fast compared to my old Dell but that is probably not the case for many others). Set up was a breeze and it worked smoothly right out of the box. My only issue is that I had some older software that is no longer compatible with Windows 7 but that’s not an HP issue and it’s a minor point regardless.
So, I’ve only had it for about 5 days but so far it’s great. As I said the screen looks great – love the 17″ size which will come in handy when I stream movies from Amazon. The responsiveness and boot up times are very good so far. The other surprising thing, pleasantly, is how light it is for it’s size. I’m not saying I would carry it around with me everywhere but if/when I do need to move it around I can tell that it won’t be very much of a burden.
So all in all very satisfied with this upgrade and would certainly recommend this for any normal uses like general web browsing. Not sure what serious gamers would think – I imagine this isn’t targeted at them anyway – but I do play an online golf game with pretty good graphics and it performs very well. Hope my initial impressions are helpful to someone else.

Stunning Speed/Excellent Resolution For A BIG Laptop

I’d purchased this to replace a $350 Toshiba POS laptop (lol) for my 17 year old daughter. When we received it…we were both impressed at how thin it was for a sizable laptop (over 17″). As an ex-IT admin…I can easily say the most important thing to look for in a laptop is the RAM, which will determine how fast (or slow) your computing experience will be. The hard drive size isn’t too important with the large HD sizes currently available. Trust me when I say that if even if you’re a heavy downloader/internet user…it’ll be a LONG time before you come close to using up 640KB of HD space. That’s over a half a TB…which is a LOT of space! Let me break it down into pros/cons:
PROS:Incredibly fast start. The “welcome screen” pops up with very minimal delay…even after a reboot.Excellent display clarity – I’d rate it equivalent to most HDTV’s.Very fast downloading/use of internetStyle wise, it looks impressive & has the technology to matchMinimal “crapware”Boasts 6GB RAM for a very reasonable price
CONS:Makes Mom’s 1 year old, 15″ HP laptop look like a sluggish netbook (not that I’m jealous…lol).
All in all, for $529, this is an amazing deal!

Everything I was looking for

I purchased a HP g7-1310us (17.3-Inch Screen) Laptop and it was delivered within 2 days. I mainly use it for work and it has all the features I was looking for. The monitor is huge, which I love. The keyboard is big. Resolution for camera is awesome. It’s very fast and I can’t wait to use it everyday. It’s pewter color and slim. Fabulous !

Superb Laptop

Just got this laptop last week, and I am VERY happy. I use it mainly for internet browsing, Email, Skype, and movies. A breeze to set up, didn’t even have to read directions. It practically set itself up Love the screen resolution. I do not do gaming, if that is your intent, you may want to increase graphics capability. This is a great laptop, at an excllent pricepoint. Very quick response, and reboot time. One tiny annoyance is the “hard click” on the buttons below the touchpad, but I can live with it. The touchpad itself is great and has high sensitivity. Overall, I love it, and would highly recommend.

I love it

I just recently got this computer as a gift from my husband. It is quite a bit bigger than my last laptop but it is not to heavy. It is very quick and I can upload my pictures into photoshop that I have already added and edit them without skipping a beat. Netflix also plays great on here the computer keeps up with video very well. I love this laptop and would recommed it to anyone. Before we bought it we had a friend of ours who is an IT guy and major computer nerd check it out and he gave us the full go ahead to get this computer. Definatly worth the money.

Excellent laptop, fast, plenty of space and crisp screen

I bought this laptop for my mom in February for $435 (tax included) so I think it was an amazing deal. My mom wanted a big screen laptop (17″) since she will only use it at home. After looking at the specs, I figured this would be perfect for her. This G7 laptop is fast, has a lot of space, the screen is crisp and the sound is really clear. The very first thing I did was format. There were just too many unnecessary demos and garbage programs that took up space. If you decide to format, make sure you back up the drivers or download them from HP website onto a flash drive because the G7 doesn’t come with any CDs. No driver CD and no Windows 7 CD.
When I installed a new version of Win 7 (64 bit), 6 drivers were not installed. Download them from the HP website. ridiculous value for the money!

As a multimedia designer and light PC gamer I’ve been very happy with my core i5 and i7 desktop and work laptop, which both have 8 gigs of ram and powerful dedicated video cards, but I wanted a personal laptop (not company owned) that could still perform much of the same tasks, with a 17″ screen, and not cost too much. After much research and shopping, I picked up my HP G7 laptop at Staples for the unheard of price of $399 after $50 rebate(president’s day sale). I was a little concerned with it only having a core i-3 and shared graphics memory, but after loading it up with all the games and graphics software I’m very impressed with it’s speed and overall responsiveness. This past week the motherboard on my $2.5k work laptop (unfortunately also an HP) died and I ended up using my new G7 for graphics and animation work with impressive results (considering this PC has much lower system specs). Heck, it even wakes up much faster than my more powerful PCs. Sure it kinda bogs down when editing a 300 dpi photoshop file and I have to run newer games with slightly lower graphics settings, but it still runs like a champ and has never frozen or gotten the BSOD.
Cons: After careful calibration, the screen isn’t as crisp and a bit washed out compared to my nicer PCs. The plastic casing feels cheap and flimsy. I was thinking that flexing it enough might snap the motherboard or internal components, but that helps make it inexpensive and fairly light weight for a 17″ laptop. Wish it had an aluminum case, fingerprint scanner, bigger battery, separate video memory, blueray drive, higher rez screen, and USB 3.0, but given it’s core specs and at $399, it’s a freakin amazing deal and more than powerful enough for most PC users out there! Thanks HP and Staples. Even in the $500 range in March 2012 it’s still a freakin good laptop for the price…

Great BIG laptop

I bought this laptop to replace my aging desktop computer so I like the large amount of space the 17 inch screen provides. That being said the large screen does make carrying this laptop around a chore. This applies to any large screen notebook.
As a replacement for my desktop I love this computer. It is fast, has a decent battery life and a great display. Watching DVDs or videos on Hulu is delightful. The images are crisp and clear with no lag. I would highly recommend this computer if you want a 17 inch display.

having serious trouble connecting to my home internet network …

Question by : having serious trouble connecting to my home internet network?my laptop used to connect automatically to our wireless modem but for about 3 months i cant get the laptop to connect to our network. i dont know how it all works but we dont use a router (with those antennas on) we just have a little virginmedia black tower thing with green lights on and 3 cables plugged into the back that apparently gives out wireless internet my PC connects straightaway all the time but my laptop will not. i have windows 7 on both computers and all i have on my laptop in the bottom corner of the desktop is a little icon with 5 grey bars and a yellow sun. usually it would have like 3 or 4 white bars when connected but thats all it shows now. ive tried lots of things like troubleshooting and diagnose and repair but i’m no expert and have no idea whats happened to it! i have got as far as opening up a window called ‘Network Connections’ that shows two boxes, one that says ‘local area connection – network cable unplugged’ and another saying ‘wireless network connection – attempting to authenticate’ that has an icon with a blue screen and 5 green bars.
when i click on it a small window pops up that says this:Connection- IPv4 Connectivity: Not Connected- IPv6 Connectivity: Not Connected- Media State: Attempting to Authenticate- SSID- Duration 00:00:00- Speed: 0 bps
Activity- Packets: Sent 0 Recieved 0
somebody please help!

Answer by ViPIf your using Vista do the following
Control panel > network and sharing center > manage wireless networks > adapter properties
click on. internet protocol version 4 (TCPIV4)
Make sure under the general tab it says – obtain ip address automatically and obtain DNS server automatically
This may fix it

For a long time, some Microsoft officials have privately griped that PC makers don’t present Windows in its best light. They clutter desktops with icons that are often little more than ads for third-party products; include confusing utilities that duplicate functions already in Windows; require lengthy setup; and configure PCs in ways that slow them down.
For the past few years, Microsoft has been offering streamlined versions of popular PC models that don’t have the extra software, utilities or settings that some consumers feel clutter their desktops. WSJ’s Walt Mossberg tests a couple of these “Signature” PCs.
One consequence, in the eyes of these Microsoft executives, is to confer an advantage on the company’s main operating-system rival, Apple AAPL -0.90% .
Now, Microsoft is doing something about the situation. In a program unknown to most computer users, the company has been using its small chain of retail stores and its online computer store to sell customized versions of popular PC models that have been streamlined for a cleaner look and better performance. It calls these machines “Signature” PCs. They retain the maker’s brand, but sport a special Signature desktop and configuration. And they cost about the same as the identical stock version of the machine sold elsewhere.
Microsoft also offers a program that, for $99, will turn users’ Windows 7 PCs into Signature versions, if the owner brings the computer into one of its 16 stores, due to grow to 21 outlets in coming months. All Signature computers come with 90 days of free phone support, as well as help at the stores’ “Answer Desks,” which are like the Genius Bars at Apple stores.
I’ve been testing three Signature models and comparing them with the same machines as sold elsewhere without the Signature modifications. I found the Signature versions much cleaner and easier to navigate and faster in a variety of tests.

I’d recommend that prospective Windows PC buyers who live near a Microsoft store, which are mostly in the West, or are willing to shop at the company’s online store, consider a Signature machine. Some important caveats are in order. The hardware makers presumably believe, and some consumers may well agree, that the extra software, utilities and settings, which Microsoft removes or buries, are beneficial. Some of these, like offers to join game or music services, may be viewed as welcome bonuses. Others, like customized networking utilities, or launchers for the PC makers’ own media software, may be viewed as better matched to the hardware, or superior to Microsoft’s approach, even though they duplicate Windows functions. Many can be turned off, or removed, by a user with sufficient skill and time.
Also, Microsoft loads Signature machines with its own add-on software, such as its free email, photo and video programs, its Zune music and video program, and a stripped-down “Starter” version of Microsoft Office, that includes only Word and Excel, plus ads, and an offer to buy the full version.
However, the company says the stores will remove any of these a customer doesn’t want and even help the customer install competing software, such as Google’s Chrome browser, or Apple’s iTunes for Windows.

At my request, Microsoft supplied me with before-and-after laptops from Hewlett-Packard, HPQ -2.46% Sony and Samsung 005930.SE -0.23% . Over the past few days, I’ve been comparing the stock and Signature versions, and testing how much time it takes to set them up, start them and restart them in daily use, resume them from sleep, and shut them down.
The Signature desktop, which is labeled “Microsoft Signature,” features a picture of a sunset over a lake as its wallpaper. It contains no icons other than the recycling bin. The Taskbar contains only icons for Internet Explorer, the Explorer file browser, and Microsoft’s free email, photo and moviemaking programs. The system tray, to the right of the Taskbar, contains only the bare minimum of items, such as the network and battery indicators.
Signature machines are also configured with battery, audio and touch-pad settings Microsoft considers optimal. The usual third-party security software—which is typically provided for only 30 to 90 days, makes you go through some setup, and nags you to subscribe—is replaced by Microsoft’s own Security Essentials program, which is free, required no registration or subscription and updates itself automatically.
By contrast, my test H-P Folio 13 had eight icons besides the recycling bin, including several that were come-ons for music and game services. It also featured several H-P utilities.
A Sony EH37FX included an app from Best Buy that launched every time the PC started (though you could turn this off). Both stock machines festooned the IE browser with two space-hogging toolbars, including one from Microsoft’s own Bing search service; the Signature machine had none.

Signature isn’t the same on every machine. In most cases, it strips out some of the added software and utilities, and retains others, but hides them in a folder buried in the Start Menu. In some cases, however, where a utility is deemed essential for a computer’s particular hardware, it retains these.
Such decisions, and indeed all of the Signature settings, are controlled by a team of engineers housed in Microsoft’s retail division.
In my speed tests, Signature beat all the stock machines on all my trials, but the margins weren’t dramatic, usually from a few seconds to 25 seconds. On the H-P, the differences were especially minimal. Across all three machines, the biggest differences were the time it took to set the PC up out of the box and the time it took to shut down the PC.
One Microsoft official told me that Signature represents “Microsoft’s perspective on Windows,” rather than that of the hardware maker.
In my opinion, although it may generally benefit Microsoft at the expense of the hardware maker, it also makes for a better experience for the user.
